Via
Campitelli is one of the most characteristic street in Tivoli,
flanked with houses dating from the late Middle Ages. The
most beautiful is the so-called "Gothic House" (Casa
Gotica).
As in the turret-house, the entrance to this construction
is on the first floor: an elegant flight of steps in masonry,
the "profferlo", decorated on the outside with a
series of hanging arches resting on a support.
The solution
of the sustaining column under the flight of steps gives a
graceful touch to the building.
The
exsisting social order of the times is revealed by these
constructions.
At the summit of the social order there
were the nobiles viri and nobiles dominae, milites domini
followed by the members of the municipal council or those
with a private activity such as judges and notaries and
doctors.
Then followed a long list of craftsmen and those connected with rural activity.
An impressive complex of buildings which almost looks as if it is one with the surrounding rock...
Built on the place where Callisto II Borgia's Castle was situated...
It was built on the rests of a roman villa...
