According the the Liber Pontificalis St Simplicius, son of a citizen named Castinus, was born in Tivoli. He was elected Pope on 3 March 468 to succeed Hilarius.
The empire had long since declined, and the papacy was struggling to preserve its religious authority amidst political turmoil. Simplicius worked to defend the Italian peoples against barbarian invasion.
In 476 Pope Simplicius, having deposed Romulus Augustulus (the last Western Roman Emperor), proclaim Odoacer, though an Arian, king of Italy. Odoacer made few changes in the administration in Rome, firmly in the hands of its Bishop, St. Simplicius. He worked to maintain the authority of Rome in the West.
He imposed the obligation of restitution to the poor and the Church upon a certain bishop who had failed in this duty.
He was Pope until to 10 March 483, day of his death: in this day is celebrated the St. Simplicius's feast day. Simplicius would be succeeded by Felix III.
Simplicius is credited for the construction of many churches of Tivoli as the cathedral of St. Lawrence, the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, the church of San Pietro alla Carità, the church of S.Silvestro.
